Since the 70’s, the number of Chinese immigrate to the United States increased steadily, therefore creating an urgent demand for a more professional, compassionate and traditional funeral services for the Chinese community.

Established in 1976, Ng Fook Funeral Services, LLC located in the heart of New York City’s Chinatown at 36 Mulberry Street was ran by the Chan family. Before the Chan family took ownership, the funeral home was owned by Italian Americans; the transformation indicated the increasing Chinese population which led to the demand for Chinese funeral services within the community.

It is in 1985 that the second generation of the Chan family began to participate in the funeral home’s operation. Mrs. Amy Mak Chan began to oversee the company during the summer of 1985. With her tender compassionate character and kind hearted attitude and most importantly, her strong mindset to the Chinese culture and traditions, she was able to provide reliable services to many families who lost their love ones. Amy not only received wide commendations and she changed the way funeral services are provided to the Asian American community as we know it today.

The previously employed licensed funeral directors were unfamiliar with the Chinese culture; which consequently led the company to unable to fully satisfy the demands for traditional Chinese funeral services. To resolve this problem, Amy recruited her younger brother Mr. Wilson Mak to join the company the same year. She encouraged him to further his studies in Mortuary Science after he graduated from St. John University. Two years after he decided to join the company, Wilson passed the state board exam and became a licensed Funeral Director. Today, Wilson has mastered the professional knowledge of the funeral industry and accumulated two decades of funeral service experience, thus providing reliable services with the utmost quality to the Asian American communities.

In the early 90’s, Amy wants to fulfill the expansion of the Chinese community in New York City, thus opening a second funeral parlor. Established in 1993, Chun Fook Funeral Services, LLC located in Downtown Flushing, in the borough of Queens, of which is the second largest Chinese community in New York City. With the second establishment, Ng Fook’s professional funeral services, designed for the Asian community, would be available to families in Queens, Long Island, and Upstate New York.

Considering families who do not have the means to provide a proper funeral service for their loved ones, in 1997, Amy and various benevolent members of the community founded the “Celestial Love Foundation”. The foundation was created to provide funeral services to individuals in need of assistance. The foundation’s establishment has supported the creation of a good atmosphere, helping poverty-stricken families and the elderly whom do not have a support system.

Today, Fook Funeral Group has established four locations, Ng Fook and Boe Fook in New York’s Chinatown; Chun Fook in Flushing; and King Fook in Brooklyn, to best provide funeral services to the Asian communities located in different areas. The company has employed over 30 experienced employees; five of which are Funeral Directors. Each location is equipped with its own refrigeration unit and embalming room. Unlike most Chinese owned funeral homes in New York City, who hire outside vendors to handle body transfer, embalming, refrigeration and delivery your loved one to their facility the day before service. All of our services are handled within our facilities by our professional and experienced Funeral Directors and staff, with compassion and efficiency, therefore minimizing the chances of error during the process.
